FEBRUARY CYBERCROP - 2010

This little cutie is waiting very patiently to play once you have completed all the great challenges in this month's cybercrop over at The Lounge.

CHALLENGE 1
was set by CT member Kym.

Kym has challenged us to create a LO using the following criteria

• Earthy colours with one bit of red (it can be anything on your page)
• A frame
• A list
• Paint

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE - February 17

Welcome to this week's
WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE

This week I have gone "a-la natural" and have been looking through the Nature themed LOs in the gallery.
There are some gorgeous LOs in this area of the gallery and it is interesting to see the mixture of "nature only" LOs (landscapes, flowers, animals, etc) and those LOs that show families and friends interacting with all things natural.

I love the fact that you can use non-nature themed papers to scrap your nature photos and you are not restricted to, what are, the more "traditional" nature-inspired colours (browns, greens, greys) - the LOs I have chosen include those using pinks, orange and purples - just to name a few.

American scrapping manufacturer, Piggy Tales, is looking for people to join their 2010 Piggy Tales Academy Design Team.

So if think you have what it takes to design some exciting projects for them using their gorgeous products, read on......
Piggy Tales is looking for several talented designers to join their 2010 Piggy Tales Academy Design Team.  Piggy Tales Academy (PTA) offers monthly paper craft kits using the latest and greatest Piggy Tales product.  As part of their Piggy Tales Academy membership, members receive exclusive online access to a gallery full of project ideas from the PTA design team.  

Piggy Tales is looking for up to three people to fill each of the following categories.  Please specify which category you are applying for. (You may apply for more than one category. Please list in order of preference which category you would like to apply for.)  If chosen to be on the design team you will be required to create projects from the category you applied for.

1. LAYOUTS

2. CARDS

3. ALTERED ITEMS

To apply please submit the following:

1. FOUR projects from one of the above paper crafting categories (Please send four project for each category you are applying for.)

2. List of current design team memberships and links to any online galleries 

3. List of previously published designs

4. Description of scrapbooking and paper crafting teaching experience

Design Team Commitment will be 12 months, from March 8, 2010 to March 7, 2011.  Design Team members are encouraged to not be members of other kit club design teams; however, everyone is encouraged to apply and potential time commitment conflicts will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.  Selected Design Team members must receive permission from Piggy Tales to participate on any other teams created after March 3, 2010.

Your designs may be included in the following: Piggy Tales website, blog, ads, tradeshow displays, product packaging, classes, and promotions.   Piggy Tales reserves the right to use any submissions.

This week I was looking around The Lounge gallery and came across the heritage/vintage section.
Boy....there are some gorgeous LOs in there.

So.....what makes a LO a heritage or vintage LO...???
According to this article, written by Dana Hinders from the "Love to Know" website,
"Vintage scrapbookers try to make their projects resemble family albums from the late 1800s and early 1900s"
Trademarks of the vintage style include:

• Pages that make liberal use of brown, tan, cream, black, grey, and other neutral colors
• Embellishments such as buttons, keys, old postcards, and pressed flowers
• Use of newspapers, handwritten letters, or maps as background elements
• A collage-inspired design, as opposed to the clean and simple look favored by contemporary scrapbook artists
• Handwritten journaling
• Use of script or typewriter fonts for title treatments
• An emphasis on projects that include genealogical research

And you can always apply for a monthly kit from Qtea Kits - always filled to the brim with gorgeous vintage goodness and great value too.

But there is nothing stopping you from using more "modern" products on your LO.
Again, quoting the article written by Dana Hinders, you can "age" them using any of the following techniques....

• Sand cardstock with a white core to add texture, then drag a brown ink pad across the surface.
• Crumple patterned paper, then spritz the sheet with a bit of walnut ink to give it an old fashioned charm.
• Tear the edges of your border and matting papers instead of making perfectly straight cuts with your scissors.
• Layer fabric scraps, ribbon, and lace across plain paper to make a unique background for your project.
• Use brown chalk and a cotton swab to give bold stickers and die cuts a vintage look.
• Paint embellishments with a coat of acrylic paint, then wipe off the excess for a distressed appearance.
• Print out free clip art with a vintage look to make your own embellishment tags.
• Look for beads, buttons, charms, and other interesting items at thrift stores and garage sales to use to make your own unique scrapbook design elements.

You can also apply vintage elements to your digi scrapping too.

Although heritage/vintage scrapping is usually associated with photographs of days gone by, you can apply the "rules" of heritage scrapping to more modern photos.

This is best done, by altering your photos to either a black and white or sepia mode - something that can be done using a program such a Photoshop or Picasa (free download and would be suitable if you just want a basic photo editing program without all the bells and whistles)
Most photo kiosks will allow you to change your photos to black and white and sepia tonings.
Some cameras even give you the option of shooting your photos in black and white or sepia.

And a thought I will leave you with....when future generations look through your albums, the photos that you have taken today, will be heritage photos to them in the future

ALTERING CHIPBOARD - PT 2

Welcome to another tutorial on how to alter chipboard, kindly put together by the lovely Miss Jodi

The technique challenge for February is to alter two pieces of chipboard and to use them on a LO.
"Your layout must include two pieces of chipboard that you have altered in some way. It can be: painted, glittered, inked, covered, dimensional magic on it and so much more. The chipboard must be altered by YOU. It must not be pre-altered chipboard"

In this tutorial, Jodi shows us how to enhance your chipboard shapes by wrapping them in wire and adding beads.
By combining the techniques from this tutorial with the this technique, you can really make your chipboard pieces mini works of art.

Jodi has given a few extra handy hints for creating these little "chippie" masterpieces

• use a fine jewellers wire that is really malleable - the one I use is so soft I barely use the pliers (just use them to finish off)
• make sure you're chipboard is already painted, inked, stamped or otherwise - you won't be able to do this after you have wrapped it with wire! {in this tute my letters are painted had rub-on's applied and finished with DM before I start}
• this could probably work with embroidery floss, thin strips of fabric or yarn too!!!!

Once you have created your altered chipboard pieces using this technique, we would love to see your creations in The Lounge gallery

What inspires you in this photo...???
Is it the shades of red and pink flowers together...???
Is it the fact that it is a cake and you have a delicious cake recipe you have been waiting to scrap...???
Is it the fact that it is probably a wedding cake and you have a wedding photo to scrap...???
Or maybe it is the whole idea of a wedding and romance and love.
(it is Valentine's Day next week after all)

ALTERING CHIPBOARD - PT 1

Hi everyone.

I hope now that all the kids are settled back in at school, you are managing to find some "me" time to get all inspired and creative.

This month's technique challenge over on The Lounge is to alter two pieces of chipboard and to use them on a LO.
"Your layout must include two pieces of chipboard that you have altered in some way. It can be: painted, glittered, inked, covered, dimensional magic on it and so much more. The chipboard must be altered by YOU. It must not be pre-altered chipboard"

You can then upload your LO to the gallery and be in the running for a monthly prize.

The wonderful Jodi has put together a fabulous tutorial on altering chipboard using paint, dimensional magic and rub-ons - it's very easy to follow and the results are, as you will see, amazing.
